Valdosta Police search for gunman

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –Valdosta Police are looking for a gunman who shot a Remerton man at an apartment complex in Valdosta early Wednesday morning.

The victim was leaving a friend's home when the gunman tried to rob him.

Aggravated assault cases are up this year in Valdosta.

Edward McDougle was watching TV at a friend's apartment when he heard a shot fired.

"I asked my friend did you hear that? She was like yes. The next thing we know we heard multiple shots. So we just stayed in the house for awhile," said McDougle.

22-year old Shareef Wright was shot outside an apartment on East Park Avenue just after two a.m.

Wright walked out of a friend's apartment towards his car to go home when a man approached him.

The suspect pulled out a gun and told wright to "give it" to him. They struggled and then a shot hit Wright in the abdomen. A friend took Wright to the hospital.

Wright was hanging out at this apartment last night with friends. They tell us he left to go home.

"Hopefully the dude gets caught that's what he needs to go to jail for a very long time," said Wright's friend Devin Thigpen.

While police haven't made any arrests, possible charges include aggravated assault.

Aggravated assault cases are slightly up this year. Police had 118 aggravated assault reports filed in the first nine months of last year. In 2010, in that same time frame they've had 131.

While friends don't understand why someone would pull the trigger on Wright, they're glad he's going to be okay and that no one else was hurt.

Shareef Wright told police he did not know the shooter.

If you have any information on the crime, call investigators at 293-3145 or the anonymous tip line at 293-3091.
