ALBANY, GA (WALB) –High winds blew a brush fire dangerously close to an Albany mobile home park Monday and firefighters worked to keep the fast moving flames away from the homes.

Those high winds pushed that fire quickly through the woods off Mobile Avenue and Doles Avenue in South Albany.

Firefighters soaked down the flames, while Georgia Forestry Commission tractors worked to make fire breaks to stop the fire.

Residents at the Dunes Mobile Home Park could only watch as heavy smoke blew past their homes, the burning woods only feet away.

Park manager Mathilda Smith said "It's terrifying actually. Just called the boss. He told me to evacuate everybody. So I've been running up and down the street trying to get everybody out of their houses, away from the woods."

No homes were damaged by the fire, but about five acres of woods burned.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters say a train had just passed on nearby railroad tracks, and they suspect a spark from the passing train could have started the blaze.
