THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) –The Thomas County/Thomasville Humane Society will no longer provide animal control services for the city or county next year.

Officials say they're ending their 17-year relationship with the county due to decreased funding over the years. A trend they say began well before the current economic downturn.

The shelter now survives mainly through private fund raisers and donations.

Their land, building, and newest truck were all donated.

"We felt like the level of funding wasn't appropriate and we didn't see that changing in the foreseeable future," said Ed Williams, president of the Thomas County/Thomasville Humane Society Board of Directors. "So we decided this would be the best course of action."

The Humane Society originally planned to terminate their contract in January but moved the date to March when the county requested more time to make arrangements to take over animal control duties.
