ALBANY, GA (WALB) –2nd District Congressional Candidate Mike Keown announced Tuesday that Republican leaders pledged him a position on the house agriculture committee if he wins and Republicans take control of Congress.

His opponent, Congressman Sanford Bishop, stressed that he already holds a key seat on the Ag Sub-committee of the appropriations committee.

More than a dozen farmers stood with Keown Tuesday afternoon to endorse him.

He said House Minority Leader John Boehner promised him the ag committee post, and Keown says he will form a farmers advisory council.

"And it won't be made up of a bunch of big money donors. When I have a question about what works and doesn't work on the farm, I'll ask you," said Keown.

Bishop said "The bottom line is, who is better positioned to deliver for the people of the second congressional district and for Georgia agriculture. I think that the record is clear that I have delivered."

Congressman Bishop was at the Sunbelt Ag Expo Tuesday.

He said he hopes voters will compare his record of supporting Georgia agriculture to Keown's promise.

Minority Leader Boehner will be in Albany Wednesday for a fund raising function for Keown.
