DECATUR COUNTY, GA (WALB) –A fire destroyed several King West apartments in Decatur County Saturday evening.

Firefighters say the blaze began in the attic of one of the apartments and quickly spread to surrounding units.

Luckily, no one was inside the apartments that were under construction.

Witnesses say black smoke from the apartments on Bethel Road could be seen from miles away. Firefighters responded to the area and had the fire under control in a matter of minutes.

"It was gone, in no time they put it out," says Sarah Jakes, a Kings West resident. "We have some great guys here in Bainbridge, Georgia. They responded so fast. I couldn't ask for a better fire department."

Investigators believe the fire was caused from hot pipes that had been welded in the attic a few hours earlier.
