ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Seven people were rushed to the hospital after five vehicles and a semi crashed in two separate accidents late Friday afternoon in Lee County.

It happened near Fussell Road and Highway 82 in Lee County. A tractor trailer headed south toward Albany swerved to avoid a car that cut him off, the truck jackknifed and ended up in the north bound lane and ruptured the fuel tank, sending hundreds of gallons of diesel onto the roadway.

Shortly after five vehicles passing the scene collided as first responders were trying to spread sand to clean up the fuel.

"When he turned it around he pulled back on this side of the road and he was leaking diesel fuel we lost and estimated 200 gallons. Lee Co. Fire Department has been on the scene using the sand truck to spread sand on the scene," Capt. Todd Kirkland, Lee County Fire Department.

Traffic was diverted around the spill, no one involved had life threatening injuries.
