ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Child Nutrition Week wrapped up today at a Dougherty County Elementary school with a celebration to keep kids excited about eating healthy.
The theme of Northside Elementary School's assembly was "What's on your tray?"
All week, the cafeteria staff and teachers talked with students about good nutrition. They encouraged students to eat more vegetables and fruits and fewer cookies and candy.
Teachers reinforced that message with a skit and cheerleaders encouraged students to eat the school lunch.
"One of the biggest problems in America is obesity with children and that's why we're trying to teach them at a young age that it's important to eat nutritious meals," said Northside Elementary Assistant Principal Tinsley Dozier. That includes leaving out cookies and sodas.
Superintendent Dr. Joshua Murfree who also encouraged students to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
