ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Today, the final touches were made in the restoration of the historic old Mount Zion Church.

Employees from Plantation Restorations Inc. out of Newton delivered those restored pews to the church yesterday and today.

The pews were originally put into storage years ago, when they removed them from the church for exhibition space.

The father and son team spent the entire summer repairing those pews, and matching them to how they looked originally.

"These pews and windows are not only a way to transport us back to the past, but also a way to incentive individuals who wanted to support the institute," said Lee Formwalt, Executive Director of the Albany Civil Rights Institute.

Officials urge those in the community to help celebrate the role Albany played in the civil rights movement by becoming a member. If you donate a certain amount of money, your name will appear on the side of the pew.
