VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –Valdosta and Lowndes face off in the Winnersville Classic Friday. It's one of the top high school football rivalries in the country.

Keisha Moore says her son Mark Loveday was suspended for wearing this Valdosta sweatshirt to Lowndes High Tuesday. Administrators say the problem wasn't the shirt itself but the problems it caused.

"Like they stated to me 51 weeks out of the year he can wear this shirt but not this week because they're in rivalry with Valdosta," said Moore.

"The issue is not the sweatshirt," said Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith. "The issue is the disruption the sweatshirt created. You could go around the school and chances are you'd find other students wearing Valdosta attire."

The superintendent says Loveday came to class late and caused a disruption. Day claims he didn't think anyone even noticed the sweatshirt he was wearing.

The Lowndes High principal says when a student's appearance causes a disruption, a teacher has every right to take action to diminish or eliminate the problem.
