AMERICUS, GA (WALB) – Public health officials say doctors are seeing cases of a bacterial infection called Shigellosis in Americus. A tiny amount of the Shigella bacterium can make you sick, and it's passed fairly easily person to person.

It causes diarrhea. Other symptoms include fever, vomiting, nausea, cramping, and headaches. Regular hand washing and cleaning common surfaces are the best ways to prevent the illness.
