ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Congressman Sanford Bishop touts the importance of Social Security and Medicare to senior citizens in south Georgia while campaigning in Albany.

Bishop told seniors at the SOWEGA Council on Aging Monday morning he's fighting to make sure social security isn't privatized.

He picked up an endorsement from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

Bishop says Social Security has kept many seniors out of poverty, and he wants to protect it.

"It continues to serve as a lasting promise that all Americans can retire with dignity and peace of mind. Workers who become disabled can support themselves and that families who suffer the loss of a loved one will not be left without a means of support."

Bishop says his opponent, Republican Mike Keown, wants to privatize Social Security.
