AMERICUS, GA (WALB) – More than 100,000 women in Georgia get breast cancer every year. That's greater than the entire population of Dougherty County.

Hospitals and health organizations statewide are holding events to detect the disease. Doctors say early detection is the key to curing the disease. A mammogram is the best way to detect breast cancer.

Phoebe Sumter hospital in Americus is offering reduced prices on the procedure for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Marcus Johnson, from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center said that:  "it's a way to get people to think about and hopefully sign up to get mammograms if you're of that age."

To set up a mammogram, you can call the hospital or your doctor. Phoebe Sumter is also hosting a walk on the 16th. Registration is free and begins at 8 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9 a.m.
