THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – A south Georgia serviceman was killed Tuesday in Afghanistan. He was one of nine American troops who died in a helicopter crash.

Blake McLendon was from Thomasville. The Senior Chief in the U.S. Navy was a 1998 graduate of Thomas County Central High School. He was on a helicopter that went down early Tuesday morning in Zabul province in southeastern Afghanistan. It's a Taliban stronghold, and the Taliban claimed responsibility, but the U.S. military reported no hostile fire before the crash.

McLendon's family told us Tuesday night they still had not gotten details of what happened. This year has been the deadliest of the Afghanistan War with more than 500 coalition deaths, including 351 Americans.
