The VSU Blazers opened Gulf South Conference play on Saturday and looked to stay undefeated against a tough Delta State team. The Statesmen struck first after a stalled drive ended with a short field goal to put Delta State ahead by 3.
VSU's next drive saw a flurry off running plays from the Blazers capped off by a David Bailey run from short distance to put VSU on top 7-3.
After trailing 14-12 at the half, Delta State scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to gain possession of the lead. Valdosta State opened the second half with possession but fumbled the ball near mid field giving the Statesmen the ball.
In the end, Delta State held VSU on a quarterback sneak on fourth down and just one yard to go to preserve the victory 27-23.
Blazers fall to (2-1) and play at Southern Arkansas next week.
