ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Southwest Georgia doctors come together to learn more about the best ways to fight cancer.   Friday, Phoebe Cancer Center held a Cancer update with physicians from around the state and country.

They want patients to get the same level of care here as they could in larger cities.   That means they could stay with their families during treatment and still have the best resources available.

Linda Van Der Merwe said, "Things change and so we want to be on top of it.  That is the purpose of a conference like today.  It is for our referral physicians as well as the physicians that are treating the cancers, so the most important thing is to stay educated and to stay on top of what is happening with the different diseases."

Among Friday's topics were early detection of melanomas and screenings for breast and prostate cancers.
