ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Internet is a great resource for schools, but if teachers use it improperly, they could lose their jobs.
Many teachers have accounts on Facebook, My Space, Or Twitter. Like most Georgia school systems Dougherty County Schools have a policy on computer and Internet use. The policy says computer use at school should be reserved for research or classroom related work. The state has a policy that also governors what teachers do on private sites like Facebook.
"There are state standards and practices with the Georgia state standards commission that prevent teachers from being involved in a public way in lewd and unacceptable behavior and by those standards we would have means of enforcing and not allowing those things to take place on school computers and also on their personal computers," said R.D. Harter, DCSS Public Information Officer.
A teacher in Winder said recently she was forced to resign after photos and comments posted on her Facebook Page were forwarded to her superintendent.
