ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The federal government wants to help small businesses and small farmers in southwest Georgia get a larger share of government contracts.

At a conference at Albany State, Department of Agriculture representatives explained the USDA buys more than five billion dollars in goods and services every year. They want to help farmers and business owners in our area learn how to provide some of those goods and services for programs such as federal food commodity procurements. Nashville farmer Carlos Vickers says it's often hard for the little guy.

"It is unless you're dealing with a big broker or some type of big cooperative, it's kind of hard to get your foot in the door to do business with the people like the USDA which buys a lot of stuff for the school lunchroom program," said Carlos Vickers, a Nashville Farmer.

The USDA is holding a series of conferences across the country to help small farmer-owned cooperatives and small rural businesses better compete for government and commercial contracts.
