Health reform bill moves past House of Representatives

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) - In what's being called a huge victory for the Obama administration, the House of Representatives passed a health care reform bill late Saturday night.

Democrats in favor of the reform needed 218 votes to for the bill to pass, they got 220 and one of those spares came from a Republican.

One of the key hurdles overcome on Capitol Hill was an amendment banning government-funded abortions, which was demanded by moderate Democrats.

While the President congratulated the House for a victory for the American people, plenty of Republicans want to see a cheaper option.

"How bad does it have to get before we stop the spending?" said Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan.

Still, Democrats say their bill will cover the 36 million Americans who do not have access to health insurance now.
