Adversity keys Patriots final four run

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  A five year span between final four appearances may not seem like a big deal.

But when you are Westover team that had made nine semifinal appearances in a span of 15 years, then five years seems like a drought.

The drought has finally ended for the Patriots.

Westover plays Gainesville in the AAA semifinals Friday in Macon.

A final four trip seemed unlikely three weeks ago.

That is when Westover had to forfeit three wins because they played too many regular season games.

It also meant the Patriots had to win their way into a state tournament.

Westover not only did that.

They won the region title and coach Dallis Smith believes those forfeits are a big reason why his squad has made it to Macon.

Dallis Smith said. "I saw the team make a u-turn. A couple of kids stepped up and starting becoming leaders on the team. People like Terrence Noel, Greg Green and Kenji Breedlove. I think that incident brought us closer together."

Guard Shevern Keaton said "It actually pulled us together. We actually started believing in each other and playing better."

Westover plays Gainesville at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Macon tomorrow.

The AAA state championship game is Saturday night.
