VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - After winning a third Gulf South Conference eastern division title, the Valdosta State men's basketball team shoots for their first ever conference tournament title this weekend in DeSoto, Mississippi.

While the Blazers are focusing on winning the conference tournament, head coach Mike Helfer is thinking bigger picture.

That is the NCAA Division II tournament.

Despite the fact the Blazers are east division champions and have 22 wins, VSU is ranked fifth in the latest south region poll.

The top eight teams make the regionals and the coach knows his team could get bumped out of the field if they make a quick exit this weekend.

Mike Helfer said. " We are low in the south region. So, we are probably going to have to win some games in the conference tournament. Hopefully, our guys will understand that and will play with an intensity and a focus about us that hopefully continues us playing on."

Valdosta State plays Arkansas-Monticello at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
