ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Congress is taking action to better protect the nations food supply and a Georgia's Senior Senator is leading the effort.

The Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act wants more frequent FDA inspections at all food facilities and grants the FDA expanded access to records and testing results.

The measure was co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss of Moultrie, the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The action is the result of the recent Salmonella outbreak that health officials believe originated at a Blakely peanut processing plant.

That outbreak sickened more than 600 nationwide and may have contributed to the death of nine people.
