ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Police say a violent criminal is off the streets. They arrested a man they think brutally attacked an elderly woman inside her home.

38-year-old Cedric Parker is now in custody. Police say on February 2nd, he knocked on 84-year-old Esther Eckstein's door asking for help. She was getting food for him when police say Parker knocked her down and choked her before stealing jewelry and money.

Eckstein is former Dougherty County Sheriff Jamil Saba's aunt. She was seriously injured and she's still recovering. After a joint investigation between Albany Police and the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office, Parker was arrested Monday afternoon at his apartment on the same street where the attack took place.

"During this investigation, we did make contact with the suspect on Friday but we had to let him go because the only thing we had at that point was circumstantial evidence. Today we were able to get factual evidence to link him to this crime," said Detective Terrance Bryant with Albany Police.

Tips from concerned citizens helped lead authorities to Parker. He's in the Dougherty County Jail charged with robbery by force, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and burglary. Police are still investigating to see if he's connected to any other crimes or attacks.
