Albany - Albany gets the go ahead to start up its multi-million dollar fiber optic system. Water, Gas, and Light spent more than two years installing the fiber optic communication system.

Now, the Public Service Commission has officially certified the system, that will provide high speed Internet access and live interactive learning to schools and city and county buildings.

"We're not in competition with cable providers such as MediaCom," said Lori Farkas, WG&L."This will allow for distance Internet learning for schools in Albany." Some Dougherty County schools will soon be using the fiber optic system.
