ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The city of Americus has a proud NFL heritage.

It is the hometown of two former NFL head coaches and former all-pro safety Victor Green.

Americus is also the hometown of Arizona Cardinal tight end Leonard Pope.

Thursday the city honored their local Super Bowl hero with Leonard Pope Day.

A member of two state championship teams at Americus High, Leonard Pope was signing autographs before the official ceremony.

Leonard Pope has been giving back to Americus since he was drafted by the Cardinals.

He has his annual fundraising weekend and he has also worked on tornado relief in Americus-Sumter County.

Leonard hopes his story will inspire other children in the area to reach their dreams.

Leonard Pope said "I try to tell all the kids to stay in school. Stay off the streets. Just try to do what is right. Do what your parents tell you to do."

Leonard Pope drafted by the Cardinals in 2006.
