ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Cordele police were called to the Sunset Homes Housing project a little after six o'clock.

They found 28-year-old Elijah Jones on the ground near the car he was driving.

He died a short time later from gunshot wounds.

36-year-old Virgil Christopher also showed up to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Police and GBI agents are trying to sort out what happened.

People in the neighborhood say violence is all too common.

"It's a lot of fighting a lot of drugs, everything going on right here," said Tinette Gray, Victim's Cousin.

"It's too early to speculate who did what and where. We just got the one body, which will be sent for post mortem exam at the state crime lab," said Chief Dwayne Orrick, Cordele Police Department.

The shootout happened near the intersection of South 13th Street and West 23rd Avenue.

Witnesses say there were children in the area, and they're thankful they weren't hurt.
