Valdosta students practice safety skills

October 25, 2002

Valdosta - A mock explosion points out the importance of safety at a South Georgia school.

While students were eating lunch, teachers at West Gordon Elementary busted hundreds of balloons and set off fog machines to make it seem like a real bomb had exploded. Firefighters, paramedics, and police showed up to make the drill seem real.

"With all the school violence that's going on in our world today, we need to be prepared for a situation like this," said Pat Denmark, Safety Coordinator. "We want to be sure we know where to go and what to do in an emergency situation."

West Gordon students also participated in several other safety drills today, such as a mock intruder invasion and gas leak.
