ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Senate unanimously passed a bill Wednesday that toughens the state's food safety laws in response to the deadly salmonella outbreak linked to a Blakely peanut plant.
The legislation would require food makers to alert state inspectors within 24 hours if their internal tests show its products are contaminated.
The measure now moves to the House. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Bulloch of Ochlocknee said that if the bill had been in place it would have raised a red flag at the Peanut Corporation of America plant.
A criminal investigation is looking at why the company shipped out product after lab tests showed salmonella.
