Decatur County - It's found nowhere else in the state, and it's right here in Southwest Georgia. Georgia's first Probation Drug Treatment Center is in Decatur County.
The inmate-built facility is located at the former Southwestern State Hospital. The center houses more than 190 male probationers who spend nine months getting substance abuse treatment. Superintendent, Benjamin Ford, explains, "Once they go in front of the judge, if they should be sent to the facility a lot of detainees volunteer because have a history of substance abuse and request assistance with their issues. That's when they are sent here, by the courts."
The Department of Corrections plans to expand the center to house close to 400 probationers.
The center opened January 2001 and has 60 detainees on a waiting list.
