ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A 96-year-old Albany woman was killed in a house fire early Tuesday.

Nina Ruth Baisden was found in a bedroom of her house at 309 West Residence Avenue just before 3:00AM. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators say the fire was caused by food left on a hotplate.

"It was apparent she put something on the hot plate before going to bed and forgot about it. She woke up to the fire, and at that time couldn't get out." said Albany Chief James Carswell.

Firefighters said Baisden lived alone. She is the first fire fatality in Albany in 2009.
