ALBANY, GA (WALB) - You may have noticed a heavy layer of smoke over Dougherty and Lee Counties Friday.

It was especially thick early in the  morning.

Foresters say it's from a high number of prescribed burns going on in recent days.

The smoke isn't dissipating because a high pressure system is keeping winds stable.

The smoke is just sitting close to the ground.

Georgia Forestry Commission Chief RangerDeanna Pietras said "This is probably going to last up until April and maybe even a little longer than that. So if you see it more than likely that is what's going on. You still might want to call and make sure you are safe."

The smoke is usually thickest in the morning, so be extra careful if you're driving then.
