ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The amount of money available to help people pay their heating bills isn't keeping up with demand. The Southwest Georgia Community Action Council got 4.3 million dollars in federal money for the 2009 winter season.
So far they've handed out almost 10,000 checks in 14-counties totaling slightly more than three million dollars. They say they can process about another 1400 checks, but in Dougherty County alone there is a waiting list of about 1700 people.
"We feel that it is because of a result of the week economy we are experiencing right now. Many people have been laid off their jobs, and they are finding it difficult to meet their obligations. And they are seeking services," said Executive Director, Myrtis Ndawula.
