ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A group of South Georgians say they want to change the way the United States taxes its goods. The group of about 20 Fair Tax supporters met at the Golden Corral in Albany Saturday morning.
The Fair Tax plan is a proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll-based taxes with a national retail sales tax. Supporters say the plan would keep the items you buy at around the same price.
"It taxes all retail, sales and services; new products only. It does not tax used goods. And it taxes everything one time," said Georgia State Director for Fair Tax, Gene Key.
"And the Fair Tax we believe would be the be the strongest economic stimulus package that the federal government could pass," said Southeast Director of Fair Tax, Phil Hinson. Organizers say this was the first of many meetings that will be held to educate and increase support for the Fair Tax proposal.
