VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  The city of Valdosta continues to prosper despite the country's economic down turn; however, the mayor wants to make sure the growth is smart.

Mayor John Fretti says in the middle of a recession, he doesn't believe the city would be best served by increasing the size of buildings and offices.  Instead, he wants to focus on improvements that have already been funded.

"No new money. No new spending this year," says Mayor Fretti.  "We hold the line. I think that that's fiscally responsible. I think it's frugal, and I wanted to pass that word out not only for our council, but for everybody."

Mayor Fretti has slated roads, water and sewer, and the building of a new crime lab as improvements that will be moved forward.
