ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  New South Georgia Wildcats head coach Rodney Blackshear was playing catchup in the battle to sign players with the other AF2 coaches.

Blackshear feels he has been able to assemble a playoff caliber roster.

The Wildcats announced the signing of 16 players Friday.

Leading the list is quarterback Cecil Lester who started three games last season.

Lester is expected to battle Darnell Kennedy for the starting job.

Kennedy played at Alabama State and has been a back-up in the Canadian Football League.

Those quarterbacks will have a talented receiver corps with veterans Mel Long and Robert Kilow joining Antwone Savage who is back for a third season with the Wildcats..

The Wildcats have also signed veteran linemen Mike Lane and Kenneth Turner, fullback-linebacker Kinny Spotwood and defensive back Quentin Burrell who played last year at Florida.

Seven rookies will also be on the roster including former Lee County lineman Steve Sutton.

It is a roster that has the Wildcats believing they have a great chance for third straight playoff appearance.

Wildcats vice-president Will Carter said. "He is ecstatic. Coach Blackshear has done a tremendous job with the ate start we have had, the late hire, to bring in this much talent for us. We feel we can compete and defend our southern division championship."

Wildcats will open training camp on March 1st.

Season opener is March 21st at Florida.
