ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Well known Albany businessman Tom Crowley was shot in the hand with a Glock handgun about 10:00 Tuesday night at his home on Pendleton Street, while working on his pistol.

With more people buying and getting licensed to carry guns, Police are concerned about an increase in the number of gun accidents.

Police say Crowley was swapping the barrel on his semi-automatic, and did not realize their was still a bullet in the chamber. It went off, hitting him in the right hand. Crowley was treated and released from a local hospital.

Police urge gun owners to practice safety first.

Dougherty County Police Captain Jimmy Sexton said  "We recommend that they take some sort of safety course, or familiarize themselves in some manner with the safe operation of the handgun."

South Georgia gun dealers say sales of handguns has skyrocketed since November.
