Pumpkin picking in full swing

October 16, 2002

Sasser-- The cool weather is enticing many families to wander out to the pumpkin patch.

Pumpkin picking is in full swing at Mark's Melon Patch in Sasser. Little kids are coming out in droves to select the perfect pumpkin for Halloween.

When four year old Allie Smith and Haden Hall are asked what they want to be for Halloween they say, "I'm going to be a ballerina, I'm going to be a ballerina too!" Allie's mom Beth Smith says, "They play ball together, take swimming lessons together, they've been best friends since they were born--they are only a week a part in age."

These best buddies do everything together and today they're picking out a pumpkin. Allie says, "Here's another big one, I can hardly lift this one up." A pumpkin has to meet certain credentials for the girl's to take it home. Allie's mom says, "It has to have a flat bottom, big round full one than will make a great pumpkin."

Allie asks Haden "How about this one, you can have this one Haden." Haden says, "That's not big like this one is, I'll find you a big one." With more than 3,000 pumpkins to choose from, it takes teamwork to find the best one and for these little pumpkin pickers, the fun is in the finding.

Allie and Haden didn't have much success today. There were so many great pumpkins to choose from, the girls weren't able to narrow it down. So, they'll have to make another trip to the patch to find that perfect pumpkin.
