The unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia region declined to 8.2 percent in April, down two-tenths of a percentage point from 8.4 percent in March. The rate was 8.8 percent in April a year ago.More >>

Albany -- You can help decide whether senior citizens get a break on school taxes. You'll vote on a referendum November 5th on a homestead exemption for people 62-years and older. The referendum would change the exemption's income limit from ten thousand dollars gross to a net income.
Seniors say they like the referendum. Colleen Chappel said "I think when you become a senior citizen and have to live on a fixed income, you should not have to pay a school tax." Lee Vail said "The retired people need a tax break."
If voters approve the referendum, taxpayers would need to itemize their tax returns to receive the school tax homestead exemption increase.
