ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The city of Albany has someone new protecting your interests before the legislature in Atlanta.   For the last two years the city has hired a lobbyist in Atlanta, to protect the city's interests in Washington D.C.

This year they made a change, selecting the Cornerstone Group's Rufus Montgomery to protect the city's interest. In the past the city's lobbyist has secure money for projects like the fire department's new training center, one area of interest this year is a statewide proposal that may restrict cell phone use.

"They're looking to do the same thing the city is banning the use of cell phones in vehicles whether it be hands free of not, I won't know at this point it's new on the table, but again this is what the lobbyist is best for as issues come up on the Atlanta scene which we may or may not know about they make sure that we do know," said Assistant City Manager Wes Smith.

Montgomery is also pursuing state grant money that could be available for more aggressive cities willing to go after it.
