ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The city is trying to find out how much it could cost to tear down the old Heritage House Hotel on East Oglethorpe. It's been an eyesore for years.
The owner, Marvin Baptiste, has been in court several times during the past year because he stopped renovations on the building and didn't property board it up.
Last week, the city had an asbestos survey conducted and will soon get estimates for demolition and asbestos removal before proceeding in court.
Code Enforcement Director Mike Tilson said, "Before Mr. Lott were to decide if we were going to ask the commission for the funding, he needs to know exactly how much it would cost."
Early estimates have been as high as a half million dollars to demolish the building. The Heritage House has been vacant for more than a decade. Baptiste bought it in 2006 but ran into financial trouble when he had to clean up asbestos from the building.
