VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

After Valdosta police finally released the identity of the man who was shot by Officer Vernotis Williams on December 15th, more new details are coming out and new charges are being filed.

It turns out Zabian Bellamy, a 27 year old Valdosta man, has a past criminal record in Valdosta. Officer Williams, who shot Bellamy after he pointed his gun at Williams, was placed on administrative leave, pending further investigation.

Captain Bernard Robinson gave updates on the case against Bellamy, saying, "He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a housing authority. Zabian Bellamy was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon."

"Officer Vernotis Williams has returned to light duty with the Valdosta Police Department," says Captain Robinson.  That light duty includes office work.  Officer Williams cannot carry a gun or patrol the streets until the internal investigation is complete.
