ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The city of Albany is implementing a hiring freeze immediately. The sluggish economy is taking a toll on sales tax collections, and general fund spending is outpacing revenue.

Collections were down 8% in December over December 2007. Beginning Wednesday, City Manager Al Lott placed a hiring freeze on part-time and full-time positions other than public safety.

All capital expenditures have also been put on hold. Lott challenged department heads to cut non-essential spending by 25%.

Overtime is limited to mission critical tasks and tuition reimbursements for employees have also been frozen.
