SMITHVILLE, GA (WALB) - Halfway through the Christmas weekend travel period nine people have died in traffic crashes in Georgia including a man killed in a Christmas night wreck in Southwest Georgia.

66-year-old James Willis Nolan was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup on Stanton Drive in Smithville just after 6:30 PM Thursday night. State Troopers say he ran right through a stop sign at US 19 and crashed into a ditch.

Neither he nor his passenger, 43-year-old Elaine Wilson Davis, were wearing a seat belt. Nolan was killed and Davis remains in fair condition at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Troopers are waiting for blood test results to confirm whether alcohol was a factor in the wreck.

The State Patrol predicts 19-people will die in crashes by midnight Sunday.
