Camilla-- A South Georgia woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing her baby will not get an appeal. The Georgia Supreme Court is refusing to consider the appeal of Denise Lockett of Baconton.

Lockett is mentally disabled and has an IQ of 62. She was 16 when she went into labor on September 27, 1997 and delivered the baby into a toilet.

Mitchell County prosecutors charged her with murder. Her lawyer challenged her conviction because he believes she did not receive effective legal representation.

The state Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal Tuesday. Lockett's attorney will carry the case to the United States Supreme Court.
