ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
When Ken Veilands started the Darton soccer programs less than ten years ago, one of his goals was to promote the sport in south Georgia to the point where his national championship contending program could recruit local players.
Another sign that is happening came Tuesday when Westover High's Becky Brown signed to play for the Lady Cavs.
Brown started her soccer career playing for the Albany YMCA Hotspur club team and is a two-time team MVP and three year all region performer with the Lady Patriots.
Head coach Ken Veilands is thrilled that a player of Becky's ability and academic standing wants to stay at home to play for a Darton team that has finished second in the nation twice in the last three years.
Becky Brown said. "I would be honored to play for that team. Just this past season they got second in nationals. I don't know where else you could get that at home."
Lady Cavaliers soccer coach Ken Veilands said. "There are some good players coming through. I hope this is the beginning of good things to keep coming."
Becky had knee surgery this fall and hopes to be able to play soccer for Westover by late March or early April.
