Albany- The law states that the windows must allow at least 35 percent of the outside light through, but there is an exemption for law enforcement vehicles which can be darker.

Steve Davis has been tinting windows for 18 years and says a lot of people ask for darker tint. "I have people buy their tint somewhere else and bring it up here for me to do it, and if they don't use mine, I won't use it because its got to be legal," says Steve Davis of Automotive Accessories.

There are some exemptions in the law for pick-up truck and sports utility vehicle windows. Davis also says that window tint can keep the temperature inside a car 10 to 15 degrees cooler.
