Despite being outscored 12-7 in the final quarter, the Valdosta State Blazers held off the Southern Arkansas Muleriders in a 31-28 win at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium Saturday night.
The Blazers led 24-16 entering the fourth quarter before the Muleriders scored twice in the final period but could not convert on both point after attempts. Southern Arkansas started the scoring off in the second period on a 30 yard field goal by Thomas LaToof giving them a 3-0 lead. Quarterback Ted Williams then hit Nik Lewis on a 6 yard pass to give the Muleriders a 10-0 lead.
Valdosta State (4-0, 2-0) got their first points of the evening on a one yard touchdown run by quarterback Buster Faulkner. Faulkner finished the night 35 of 48 passing for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns (3 throwing, 1 rushing). His biggest strike came in the fourth quarter on a 41 yard strike to Reggie Mosely. The Blazers finished the night with 474 yards of total offense to SAU's 358.
The Muleriders (2-2, 1-1) pulled within three two and a half minutes into the final quarter on a 29 yard touchdown pass from Ted Williams to Nik Lewis, but could never get any closer after Faulkner's pass to Mosely.
