ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The SOWEGA Council on Aging says "Thank You" to hundreds of volunteers.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program annual recognition luncheon was held Tuesda afternoon, with more than 400 of the 600 senior volunteers attending. They were treated to Christmas music and fried chicken, to thank them for their combined 93000 hours of service. Program leaders say the volunteers help themselves as well as the community.

SOWEGA Council on Aging Executive Director Kay Hind said "It's good for your mental health and your physical health. It's really been proven people who volunteer live longer."

The Retired Senior Volunteer program is for anyone over 55 years of age, and is arranged through the SOWEGA Coucil on Aging.
