ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There is no longer an empty seat on the Dougherty County Commission. Gloria Gaines was sworn in as District 5 commissioner Monday morning.

That seat was left vacant by the death of Art Searles in August. Last week, Gaines won a runoff race for the seat. She took office early to serve out the remainder of Searles' term which expires this month.

She said, "I had an issue in my neighborhood. I went to Art and Art worked it out and when he passed, the question that I raised was, 'who's going to take his seat?' And so I looked around and I said, 'Why not me?'"

In just a few weeks, Gaines will be sworn in to begin the four year term of office she was recently elected to fill.
