Coffee County buys old post office

September 24, 2002

Coffee County - A Southwest Georgia county buys a vacant building because of growth pressures.

Coffee County purchased this old post office building on East Ward Street in downtown Douglas. The eight-thousand square feet building will bring together building permit officials, environmental health experts, E-911 and Emergency Management Operators.

Between 1990 and 2000, Coffee County has added more than 8-thousand new residents. County Administrator, Thomas Couch, says, "As a result, we've noticed some of our county services, the way they were structured, were creating some inconveniences to the public."

The County will spend $350,000 to purchase and an estimated $300,000 to renovate. Officials are working on architectural plans and hope to have bids complete by next month.
