ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It was a thrilling morning for hundreds of Dougherty County athletes at the Albany State University gym.

The 2008 Special Olympics for Dougherty County got underway.

Hundreds of special olympians will compete in basketball, bowling, and other sports.

During Friday's opening ceremony, athletes carried banners for their schools and centers they represent.

Special Olympics County Coordinator Karen Beasley said "They don't get an opportunity to do varstiy or junior varsity games. This is their opportunity to shine. And have the chance that every other student does."

Many of the best special olympic athletes will earn berths to the State Special Olympics that will be held in Marietta in January.
